Project Description

We identified this PFI opportunity with Kent County Council and really enthusiastically responded to the bid process with a dramatic proposal including:

  • An exciting design
  • Individuality within a common theme – including provision of learning barns
  • Easier teaching through design for passive supervision
  • Flexibility – multi use teaching areas that can be enlarged or reduced depending on need
  • Adaptability – spaces can be used in many different ways
  • Expandability – providing easily identifiable areas for future growth
  • Entrance space focus to provide identity and a community focal point
  • Interaction with external space to provide internal/external teaching spaces

The designs were coincident with the main drivers for each of the schools derived from close consultation with the Head Teachers and stakeholders ensuring the passion for change would be delivered at Ramsgate, Snodland, West Malling, Aylesford, Ashford and Tonbridge.

With our funding partners Bilfinger Berger and Costain, we formed the SPV, Kent Education Partnership (KEP) specifically for the purpose of delivering Kent County Council with a solution that not only met the specific requirements of KCC and the members of the individual schools, but gave a long term commitment to quality design, excellence in build and value for money throughout the 25 year concession of the project.

Whilst all schools share the same “learning barn” principles we concentrated on the £55m construction element of The North School – Ashford, Hugh Christie Technical College – Tonbridge and Holmesdale Technical College – Snodland, where we have delievered above expectation.
